Off to the Food Bank

I'll be taking exerts from my final project article I wrote last semester on Pastor Huff and tying them into the photos I've been taking recently.

In the darkness of dawn a fire ignites over the stovetop in Pastor Von Huff’s kitchen. The faint smell of rotten eggs floats through the crisp morning air as gas leaks from the stoves old pipes into the flames.

It’s 4:45 a.m. Time to start cooking.

In less than twelve hours 200 homeless people will be outside his kitchen door, waiting to be fed.

The Food Bank location we’re are at is the main hub of the southern Arizona branch, and is the largest of the five locations in the area. Over 500 families come each day to shop at the discount food market and to receive emergency food boxes.  “We hand out over 20,000 food boxes each month,” said Jack Parris, media relations manager for the food bank. “It’s probably the most important thing we do here. It really helps out families who need to stretch their food dollar as far as they can.”

Because Huff has a 501-C3 nonprofit organization permit, almost all the food we’ve collected is free of charge. The only thing that Huff has to pay for are the pre-packaged food and drinks that he piled on a separate cart, which cost a flat rate of ten cents per pound. His total came out to $11.10.
